Saadat Hasan Manto
Saadat Hasan Manto was a novelist, famous short story writer, and scriptwriter. Someone says him one of the great short story writer in the history of Urdu literature. Manto wrote many books, some scripts, and dialogue of Pakistani films.
Saadat Hasan Manto: Biography
Saadat Hasan Manto was born on 11th May 1912 in Ludhiana during British rule (now in India).He belongs to a notable Kashmiri family. Manto got his early education from Ludhiana. He was not a good student; therefore, he passed his matriculation examination in the fourth attempt. Saadat Hasan Manto was interested in story writing during his study days. He left his study uncompleted and started to write stories. Saadat Hasan Manto was an eyewitness of bloodshed and barbaric incidents during partition. He saw the massacre of the women and children. All of this left a deep impression on his work and personal life. Manto was not in favour of the partition of India. He wanted to see the Hindus and Muslims living together.
After Creation Of Pakistan:
After Partition, Saadat Hasan Manto came to Lahore and started his career as a writer. Manto had a friendship with each class of people. Some well-known writers of Urdu were in his social circle. Manto had good relations with some top directors and actresses of Lollywood. He interested into work for Pakistan film industry. Manto was addicted to alcohol, but he used his best capacity to write his best.
Saadat Hasan Manto was very soft heart man. Love of humanity and sympathy to crushed segments of society was involved in his yeast. Manto hates hypocrisy and hypocrites. He was a man of clear speech and expected to others also follow this. At the time of his death, Manto refused to drink the Zam Zam (Holy water of Makkah). He demanded the whiskey which he often used in his whole life.
It is no doubt that Saadat Hasan Manto was a great short story writer of his age. Although some of the critics told him a pornography writer, Manto not agreed to them. Manto himself responded to the critics in his articles that his work is not pornography, but he unveiled the self-rule and hypocrisy of the society. “How a prostitute can say a gentlemen thing” Saadat Hasan Manto himself explained his work. Manto said that it is the situation of our self-made social and moral values that a woman cannot drive a Tonga, but she can run a brothel.
The society undervalues Saadat Hasan Manto in his whole life. He fought a war against the poverty, illness, and social hypocrisy. On the 18th day of May in 1955, Saadat Hassan Manto died in Lahore at the age of 42. No doubt, he was a superstar and classical writer of Urdu.
